What is a Kylix?

A type of wine drinking cup or wine vessel with a wide shallow body on a stem often with horizontal, symmetrical handles. The shape of the kylix allowed the drinker to drink whilst recumbent at a symposia, a "drinking party". The tondo, interior circle of the cup, was the primary surface for painted decoration. The painted scenes would only be seen in stages as the wine was drained so that they would surprise or titillate the drinker as they were revealed. Because the primary use for the kylix was at a symposium, they were decorated with humorous and light hearted scenes, often sexual in nature. Dionysos, the god of wine, was a common subject.
